5734 Monday Fr: Karen Sanders 04/08/96 To: y'all 10:06 Re: things Feline, thoroughly enjoyed lunch. Sorry to miss the 'hers on Saturday irc but was shopping with kids for Easter clothes. BTW Feline, Wes's NT Server install is proceeding. He had trouble because he put all his NT stuff in a D: partition, which made his CD E:. All the CD install programs read and hard code that CD drive letter, so he can run his CD programs in either Windows or NT but not both, since his D: partition is transparent to Windoze and it thinks the CD is D:, not E:. Such is life. Cindy? A ring? wow, good for her, hope she does well forever (with or without ring and associated being.) Mike, my knowledge of comics is very limited. Maybe it's time Batgirl grows up, eh? and she can be batwoman. Somebody could make a lot of the archetype of the mature woman being evil, and the young, innocent female being non- threatening. Wonder if Robin will steal the show from the George Clooney Batman in the next movie? Oh, skating fans, the skating Sunday was the Cotton Classics, had show of past Olympic Gold medal winners (was the last show the EGerman pairs did before the male partner died). Scott Hamilton was the one who seemed to do the mostest bestest jumps, and he can still spin faster than anybody else that was on the show. Seemed like they were concentrating on interpretation and less on jumps, altogether. Peggy Fleming stil has the grace to outdo the other women. And the ballet steps of whatsername (last goldmedal winner) looked a little silly even though she is a favorite skater of mine. A long show but there were many very moving pieces. Isn't it interesting how the "common man" can like ice skating/dancing but they wouldn't purposely watch any other form of musical interpretation unless bribed? Karen 5735 Monday Fr: Karen Sanders 04/08/96 To: y'all 15:49 Re: egads This is not a good day to work on my pc. First, I tried to bring up Mosaic, early this morning. It wouldn't come up for lack of memory -it used to work. So I backed out some optimizations, loadhigh, etc. still didn't work. So I used Netscape and it worked just fine. Conducted about an hour of work. Go to lunch. Now, it seems at least 2 applications don't come up - one hangs on a blank screen, the other puts up an initialization screen then drops back to the DOS prompt. Heard somewhere that a person using a computer can plan spending 20% of their time messing with their computer. I seem to be accumulating several lifetimes at once. ...of computer messing time, that is. p.s. went home and ran diagnostics. Hard drive is getting hard errors. Wonder if Miss V. still has hers she'd like to sell...hmmm.\ One hardware guy I know swears the lifetime of a laptop is one year. Dumped the 286 and the 386sx as the GNU C compiler 1) requires a 386 or better and 2) there was something screwy with the 386sx OR the fpu emulation, don't know which. Put the compiler on the 486DX2/66 and the same program that I was compiling (hello world, believe it or not) that was blowing the 386 out of the water, compiled and ran fine over here. VERY NICE to have the same compiler on the Linux box and the DOS box, I guess I am getting old enough to start to hate learning curves unless there is a real purpose to it. The job thingie that I was waiting on (I thought I was working on it) just doesn't seem like its going to jell before I have a financial collapse, if anyone knows anyone looking for a good computer person, PLEASE let me know. My sushi mentor has visited a couple of time from chicago lately (he's one of the 4 good guys from up there) and we took him to our fave sushi place for pig outs. Discovered the freshwater eel AND why I didn't particularly care for it last time. Its supposed to be eaten when it is still warm (from the sauce, not recently dead :-), the difference is night and day ! Could be considered a desert... Just to keep him balanced we also took him to MCG, he was pleased with both places. If we keep working on him, he might move out of that sewer, he is almost as fed up with ILLannoy as I was when I left (just over a year ago, now, wow). Worked at getting the driveway usable about three days ago, making big ones out of little (HAH) chunks of concrete. Its mostly useable now as long as you don't have 5 people in the car. I'm almost usable now with the application of MASSIVE doses of Alive and ibuprofin. Dumb, but necessary... Got a chance to play with Warp Connect while Jim was here. Even better than plain ole Warp. My only complaint is that it won't autodetect (or accept) any of my ethernet cards :-(. Nice to see my windoz apps run more decently under winos2, now that I have a "play" machine, I might just move all my MIDI stuff off to that and use Warp for real work ;-). Most of them were the Compaq home pages, but there were a couple that are interesting. http://www.paragen.com/vr/notebook.html - this one tells of their sales service for new, used, and reconditioned notebooks. http://www.paragen.com/vr/acp/order.html - this is their link for ordering. ontology@ix.netcom.com - this is their email address for seeing if they actually have what you want. They want about 5 or 6 pieces of information here so you need to check their pages to see what info to include. http://www.reed.edu/~pwilk/aero_stuff.html - it is probably obvious that this is a home page about aero stuff. Nice page. Also thought I'd mention that I saw lots of messages about the aero in the Compaq conf on cis when I was shopping this time last year. Darrell got a kick out of option 5. Dec just came out with their HiNote Ultra 2. $2999, 100mH Pentium, 8meg, 840meg Harddrive, 10.4 inch active color display.they are cheaper than you would ever believe, and cheaper than they are selling the 486's for. The Ultra2 is probably so new the price structure on the other machines hasn't had the chance to react. It rings in my mind the statement that a laptop has an effetive life of (read: effective life of) one year. It makes digital's passport service -they send a courier to pick up your machine and return your computer in 48 hours- sound wonderful. It costs all of $89 to extend this sort of service to the second and third years of owning your digital notebook, or you can just use the traditional drop it off/pick it up service with free parts and labor warranty. The dang thing about these machines is everything is all one board. Had considered buying a second Aero and use this one for spare parts, but I'm told they have changed models around and an Aero is not an Aero, in particular. I don't have $3000 to spend but I don't have the time to monkey around with this stuff like I've been doing. I told someone that it was the first game in years I had played that didn't involve a monitor and a mouse. I really needed this. Tax time is over. I made it. NOTE TO MIKE: TurboTax is my HERO. I bought the deluxe version on CD. Highly recommended. It was like sitting down with an accountant. Loads of videos of people telling you how to fill out the forms, and what to do next year to save more money. Then you can log on to their web site and download the state version for $25. I did my state taxes in five minutes, once i finished my fed return. This program taught me how to depreciate equipment and itemize my deductions. I'm thoroughly impressed with this product. Mindspring rookies: here are some tips i want to share in helping to set up their dial-up for Win95. - Their subnet mask is printed incorrectly. It should be 255.255.255.0 . Their book says 255.255.0.0 and it isn't right. I don't know what effect this has, however. - Make sure that you enter your IP and server info by making a new dialup connection, and entering the numbers there, not just in the TCP/IP setup in the Network control panel area. i say this, becuase i have run into these before, and i know how rotten their tech support people can sometimes be. gotta go... good night to all. andy 5755 Wednesday Fr: vikki welch 04/17/96 To: Some 10:19 Re: Some Feline: Manual Labor, isn't that the spanish guy that lives down the street :-) ? Can do is the direct result of MUST DO and being too damn hardheaded to say "I can't do it". Being too broke to hire anyone to do it also helps :-). This hasn't been fun, perhaps somewhat rewarding, but not fun. Manually moving 100+ lb chunks of concrete is *great* exercise, but my knees only quit screaming a little bit yesterday :-). As for Seder, I rather enjoyed it - I wasn't sure what to expect and didn't expect to really do so, but I did :-). The matza(sp? knees are still too sore to wander into the kitchen and check :) turns out to be something I like *better* than all the snack crackers I have tried to date - I was rather amazed as I expected anything that was designed to feed-on-the-run was going to be pretty awful. The gefeltefish(sp, again, sigh?) I had expected to be totally AWFUL, but it wasn't bad either. The subject / context / ritual(?) seemed quite intelligent to me. Remembering history as it was seems to be a damn sight smarter than re-writing it as is done today to fit the current definition of politically correct. If you study history there is much to be learned of value. The current notions of the educational system and political agendas will "byte-you-in-the-butt :)" if you depend on those when you need real facts... A culture with a calendar year of 5756 ( I think it is) is some real food for thought... The Temple we go to is a Reconstructionist. I rather like that as they accept you for who you are and still maintain the core (important) beliefs. From my perspective in this, it seems that the "religion and dogma" are more for successful living under adverse conditions rather than, as I see christianity in general, a political power gaming system (and pretty brutal / cruel to boot). Pathetic to say, but I've met, maybe, a half dozen "christians" who have a clue as to what the teachings are all about. Moreso, it seems that most of them view it as a social thing that only applies on sundays for an hour and after that (between) anything goes... ( I used to be a roman catholic :-( ). As for religious beliefs, whats wrong with rational, besides, tell me where the 10 lost tribes went and I can probably tell you whether or not I am Jewish :-) :-)... Also interesting is the concept of personal responisbility rather than forgiveness for anything... Mike Bate: Congrats on arriving safely ! andy makely: > - Their subnet mask is printed incorrectly. You might want to check and see what class of network mindspring has before making this statement. I sincerely doubt that they only hold a Class C (possibly multiple Class Cs). Getting that wrong makes for some interesting routing problems and potentially some very unhappy SysAdmins.... The netmask shown is for a Class B, the one you give as "should be" is a Class C netmask (subnetting not applying in either case...). All: The life and times of... :-). Things are not going well these days. Been working at streightening out the wiring in the house. Whatta mess ! There are still three main feeds that are using the "wire and post" wiring (probably about 60 years old now, or so). I've found some that the insulation is rotten and falling off the wires that are stapled to the floor joists (not to mention running through the walls, shudder). Started pulling the (fibreglass, scratch, scratch) insulation down and following them and they branch out like a spider web. Rather scary and depressingly LARGE a job to fix. I disconnected one of the worst ones yesterday and lost power in a number of seemingly unrelated areas... Re-connected it under the pretense of "it hasn't burned down yet"... Some of the place has been rewired by IDIOTS and I am working at fixing that also. The junction boxes have no retainers on the wire, just the knockouts punched out and the wires crammed through them and wire-nutted together (poorly). This is what caused the melt down of the furnace feed - the wire got rubbed against the raw edge of the junction box long enough to short out. Gee, what fun, what a job... The car still isn't running, although I have cleared all the trouble codes from the computer/ECU and they haven't come back, not a clue, although I think it has to do with the throttle positioning motor (TPM) or possibly the throtle positioning sensor (TPS). I loaned the docs on it to a "friend" to copy and haven't seen them since, even with blatent hinting about thier return. No transport is getting REAL depressing. Sigh... Owning a car isn't half as expensive (time or money) as trying to depend on marta (hahahahahaha)... Just a bit of cynicism here... Where IS Patrick now that I need him (again :-). Just had our morningly power failure. Sure appreciate the UPS... Got my RC sailboat rigged for the summer. Need to make new sails for it as I screwed up the jib when I made that (sailmaking 101 :) and the main is over 10 years old. Still will be fun this summer ! Someone asked me why the hull has 43 coats of paint on it, well, the 43rd coat didn't have a run in it :-). My "Shushi Mentor" came down from chicago (one of the 4 "good guys" from there) and brought a load of my stuff down ! It was cheaper to drive to Atlanta to get computer parts than to try to get them locally up there - go figger. Anyway, I got my guitar, home brewing stuff, some of my ham radio stuff and the rest of my firearms. I am looking forward to brewing something drinkable and need to find a homebrew store here for supplies (I rarely use the yeast from the kits, unless there just isn't anything else). Since I like the taste of beer, especially during the summer and could care less about alcohol content) I'll be working at some new recipes for VERY low alcohol beer. Should be fun... All: I'm working, getting established, etc. I initially stored my UHaul trailer load of stuff in Mom's garage, and lived in the van at the DZ for several days. They have a couple hot showers, kitchen with fridge, microwave, so that was pretty workable, tho it did get a tad chilly a couple of nights. Now am renting a room from a jumper - technically, sharing a house, since I pay half the rent, for basically my bedroom and kitchen privileges - not exactly a great deal, but it was good timing, no lease/commitment needed, and it's fairly close to the DZ (about 10 miles). I expect I'll make do with that setup for a couple of months, then look for a small cottage to rent by myself. The housemate went out of town for a couple of weeks the day I moved in, so I don't know him much, but he seems OK and is apparently well regarded around the DZ. He's an ex Golden Knight (Army parachute team) and probably soon to become the DZ manager. Work is a bit overwhelming so far, have learned a LOT already, with plenty more to still learn. So far, have put in 10 - 12 hours a day, which I'm not used to, so that seems tough, but it'll work out. One of my main jobs so far is building harnesses, which is interesting. I still need some help doing the cutting (variations, adjustments for body size, etc), but am getting better on the big harness sewing machine. Also do pre-assembly on various container parts, and some reserve assembly and repack work. The money is awful, even worse than I expected, but I figure the experience, and the chance for a change, which I needed, makes it OK, for a while anyway. Once I start feeling up to speed on more of it, I'll go for a raise. The local tavern (typical Pacific Northwest Small Town) has a nice porter on tap. But I don't anticipate having much time to spend there. Despite working the long hours all week, Larry (owner) wanted to know what time I'd be in Saturday - I spent the morning working on the van, and came in for a couple hours in the afternoon, but so many people come in and interrupt on a weekend, it was hopeless, so I left and drove up to Mom's. The other person who's full time there is 20, has been doing that sort of work for 5+ years, and it's his reason for living (and is *really* good at it) - but it might make me look bad only wanting to put in 50 hours/week... The van had a bad air pump, I'm lucky it didn't seize up - now removed, will take it apart later. The plan is to put off licensing it in WA as long as possible (and then some), since I doubt it will pass the standard emissions test due to the high mileage, so I'll save any expenditures on it til then, as you can get a waiver if you spend $XX on it towards making it better. I'm now at Mom's for the night, will take a van load of 'stuff' down to the house Sunday, probably to include the computer - tho dunno how much use it'll get - between no spare time, and no phone line in my room... Most calls will be a calling-card deal, at a couple bucks a pop, so that'll be very limited for a while too. The following are all offline responses to stuff. Thanks to many of y'all about the pharmacy board thing. I am appealing the one point based on the ambiguosity of two of the questions that I got wrong, and I should know in about 6 weeks if all is OK. They should give me the point, but being the jerks that they are, they might not, so if not, I will sue them. The reason I can get away with sueing them and probably win is that they gave a makeup exam two weeks later to people who didn't make it to the exam. I was told that no such thing would be happening, hence I did unwise things to get back in time. Getting back in time kept me up all night the night before the exam, and so I missed questions that I wouldn't have had I not been half asleep. I did give them my name and full situation when I called the day before the exam, so they should have called and offered to allow me to take the make-up as well, or else have been more reasonable on the phone when I told them I was in Maryland and had no idea how to get back to New York in all that snow. So in six weeks, if I didn't pass and they don't offer me a retake, I'll sue them. Definitely not my first choice of things to do. And I have a job interview at the Bronx Veteran's Admin. This is what I remember about the techniques. The thieves work in teams of two. When they spot someone pulling a cart with their luggage and what is obviously a laptop case (the laptop is usually the top item strapped to the cart) one of the team will jostle the person pulling the cart, diverting that person's attention, while the other team member will neatly snatch the laptop and walk away with it. An old pickpocket team ploy. If the person is actually carrying the laptop, the team will follow the person to the security check station. When the person lays the laptop on the conveyor belt to go through the xray machine, the two team members will push ahead of that person. The first team member gets through the metal detector ok; the second member will have something on that will cause the alarm to go off. The laptop owner is delayed while the guards make sure the person who set off the alarm is really ok. Meanwhile, the laptop has conveyored itself through the xray and team member #1 picks it up and walks off with it. **************** End offline reply ******************** neil the nerd neil 5833 Thursday Fr: diane mcfarland 05/23/96 To: a few 17:09 Re: not much neil...0130 is probably the time they figure you have gotten back from this week'z movie and are contemplating next week'z flix...? lan...got your "change of address" form. thanx. leela..."close to the air conditioning"??? doez that mean no a/c in the bedroom, etc.? arrrrgh!!! i guess i am spoiled by central a/c. thanx for the mazal! i hope all goez well with your appeal. it really sounds like you've got decent groundz for it. how are your babiez? mine certainly know when to hide the razor bladez. they were really weirded-out during my last cram session. stella kept head-butting, trying to get attention. stanley would take advantage of any possibility to put his fat, furry rump right down on my open book, notebook, etc. thank god they are here to keep me sane... as for july 6th, i am open to suggestionz from you and all otherz who might be interested by then in a get-together... adam...i am with brandi. you woulda had to tie me up/down to get me on that thing. glad all had a good time. as for the doctor, the britz did put up a stink over itz demise. the bbc played it that the show was "on hiatus"...then a longer hiatus, then they decided to replace sylvester mccoy, more delay, etc. eventually it just went to la-la land, to be seen on sci-fi channel (which my *stupid* cable company refusez to offer) or on some pbs stationz... the flick was different--for example, in this one the doctor actually getz to *kiss a woman*!!(worth 3 exclam ptz) of course, that'z as far as it went, but better than the old dayz. it might be fun to see the doctor, after 950 yearz, finally get la*d. actually, it might be fun to see me, after what *seemz* like 950 yearz, finally get... but i digress... if anyone wantz to see the flick, i have it on tape for your borrowing pleasure... re: nowhere man..that was about the time i figured out tom was gemini, too. the show sorta fell off mid-season, but the last three episodez have been top-notch. worth catching in re-runz... lovez to all this *hot* week, feline diane 5834 Thursday Fr: Adam COle 05/23/96 To: feline and 22:14 Re: that's cuz etc FELINE: The last three shows were probably written by Herzog. he seems to be the grease in the machine. I've been brooding about the nature of my friendships with people all week. Of course, I'm finding it a hard lesson to learn that most people aren't like me...I keep memories and people in my heart all the time, so that I'm always reliving lots of past moments. And when I see people again, I get a little confused when they don't seem to have kept me in their thoughts. It's perfectly natural that an aquaintance shouldn't have anything to say to me after four years. But somehow, to me, there's always a real loss. Tonight, I'm having one of those "Where are all my friends/ who are all my friends" nights. It shtinks. Some days, I'd swear I was entirely alone, despite any evidence to the contrary. But of course, calling in here and getting some support really makes a difference! So thanks! ALL: So I go ALL THE WAY out to Rome Ga. to play a 15 minute gig and because I get bum directions that I didn't bother to check on a map, I missed it! So no pay, and I drove 200 miles today for NOTHING! Argh. That certainly doesn't brighten a mood. Eloc grrr Adam 5845 Friday Fr: KAREN SANDERS 05/31/96 To: Adam 10:29 Re: friends Some of my friends are ok to talk about anything, others have topics which are not discussable. And some friends are helpful in some areas, and others in other areas - and vice versa for me helping them. Sometimes you can ask favors of aquaintances easier than friends. What do you call those people you work with on projects, or at paid work, who know what you did last weekend, and know you pretty well, but once the project or work is finished you probably won't keep up with each other? Where do we draw the limit with our friends? Do we consciously think "I hope their situation works out or we will have a hard time being friends" when our friend is in economic difficulties? Or say "We are friends, but I never want to xxxx with him." like go partying, visit the park or whatever you might do with another friend. At a boy scout training thing they were big on "resources", the people places things you could use to help you get your job done. There is something combining the term "resources" "friend" "support". Sometimes you can translate "I wish I had a best friend" to "I wish I had support in this very personal area". You can translate "I don't feel anybody understands" to "That guy at work had something like this happen to him last year". So, is it friends we need or do we need to be able to give and get? But sometimes you just need somebody to hang with. I have needed someone to go clothes shopping with me, always have. Always wished I had a good enough friend to do that with, instead of taking Darrell or Raymon ;-). Or somebody to go skating with. And maybe that's why people turn to releigion, for a friend, and to the social institutions to find "friends'. Remember the o-l-d Linda Ronstadt song with the lyrics "someone to lay down beside me, and even though it's not real, someone to lay down beside me... you just can't ask for more" HOw strange friendship is. How strange humans are. Karen 5846 Friday Fr: Neil Jones 05/31/96 To: All 12:04 Re: Stuff Ergo, strangers in a strange land. We both have 17" monitors and there is a new color HP Deskjet also in the family. I think Pentiums might be next. With a 2 1/2 yr old living here, the new carpet has been postponed. Less exciting news is the new gutter helmet we had installed last week. No more cleaning out gutters! This system is a stroke of genius and is almost invisible when you look at the house. We finally got rain last night so we could see it work. It was expensive but worth it. Mark is still with Transquest. He is also a full partner now in Pioneer Technologies. They have a web page. Mark can give you their web address. That address has links, I think, to other pages containing a couple of java games he has written. My nephew is getting married the last weekend this month and we are all going to the wedding. Dawn will be a bridesmaid. Samantha is flying with us while Amy (who refuses to fly) and her husband drive our Escort. If anyone is able to keep our dog Bunny for a few days, we would appreciate it. Otherwise we will have to board her. Suggestions for that would also be appreciated. She goes to the vet this morning to get all her shots, etc. Too bad she can't use a litterbox. Oh well, she would eat 3 days of food in the first night anyhow. Today we plan to go to Commerce. I need cushy shoes and I hear there is a Rockport outlet store there. Physical therapist that is working on my back says I need to give up heels for life. In my heart, I know she is right. I also intend to find a cute little back pack for Samantha's plane trip and fill it with nice quiet (and non-sticky) goodies for her to open on the plane. I bet when the engines start up on that plane she starts screaming for her mommy! She has been a real mommy's girl recently. I cherished the time when Grammy was queen around here. Samantha would look at Mark and without even saying hello would ask, "Where's Gammy?" Mark was thrilled when she progressed to saying hi to him before asking. Now she is shifting towards Gampy. I told him it would happen, and since it is a little girl, he will remain a favorite. Amy's new baby will be born in Aug, near Samantha's 3rd birthday. I can hardly wait to ahve a baby crying over my head in the middle of the night. :( Oh joy. Maybe things will not be as bad as I imagine they will be. To date, that is my favorite CD rom game. We bought "Jewels of the Oracle" and this is all puzzles. Some are pretty good. I like a little more adventuring though and not just puzzles. Skip "Torin's Passage." I have not begun to play "Dig" or "The Beast Within." The latter is 6 cd's so this may take the rest of my life. "Dinotopia" is a special set that comes with the award-winning children's book. The book is great. The game is not exciting. The game is really a chance to roam through the worlds mentioned in the book with a loose plot thrown in. There are a few things to figure out to do in the game but is really more something to occupy children. Jason Sanders might be the right age to enjoy this. The game is also really DOS-based. I get tired of getting games home and having problems because they are not really WIN95 games. "Shivers" was great and never crashed my machine. "Jewels..." crashes it once or twice everytime I try to load it. (And it is auto-loading also.) A really fun CD we bought is "The Incredible Machine" that is really intended for kids. By the use of pulleys, gears, balloons, mice-in-cages, egg-timers, bombs, etc. you do things like putting the basketball into the box. Very like the game of "Mousetrap." Cute music as well. We watched Albert Brooks' Modern Romance Sunday night. I had to return it to Best Buy because of a defective sound track. They did not have a replacement for it. Maybe Media Play has it. Until I returned MR, we had all 4 of Albert's movies. We re-watched Defending Your Life last week. I liked it better than the first time I saw it. Marshall is back!! Even though it was a rerun, it was my favorite one so I enjoyed it. --Dad neil 5872 Wednesday Fr: brian jones 06/12/96 To: All 19:34 Re: Stuff Dad--Did I tell you, I watched "Darkman III: Die, Darkman, Die" the other day? 't'was truly unwatchable - I only got about 40 minutes into it. This despite the presence of our buddy Jeff Fahey. All--We got a new jar for our blender (our old one broke nearly 5 years ago!) Just call us the Smoothie Royal Family. I made myself a dandy one this morning, with Raspberry Blueberry Yogurt Milk Sugar Vanilla Ice. Slluuurrrrp! eloc--Is "Sweeney Todd" on tap? I'm definitely going to that. PapaSON /es brian 5873 Wednesday Fr: neil jones 06/12/96 To: brian jones 21:40 Re: stuff I don't even know from Darkman. We bought a $9 movie at Media Play last weekend. An old depradoo movie called Holes. We watched almost 20 minutes, then rewound it and threw it away. It might have been good with subtitles, but the dubbing was so bad we couldn't get past that. --Dad neil 5874 Thursday Fr: Adam Cole 06/13/96 To: BJ et 00:29 Re: you know hu BJ: I dropped out of Orpheus. And when I went to see it, I really didn't feel it was that much fun to watch, although it had some good moments, and some great people in it. If you can believe that my opinion is vaguely objective even with me not in it, then you didn't miss anything. Sweeney isn't going up next year. It's DIE FLEDERMAUS, PIRATES OF PENZANCE, and SOUND OF MUSIC. I'm maybe trying out for Fledermaus, but I don't care for the other two. One I've done, and the other sounds like an opportunity to be cast in another butler role. I hope someday they do Sweeney. If they had any gutz, they'd do it next year. But gutz, alas, the Savoyards Light Opera seems shy on. It would be a financial risk in a big way, because it requires above averge time with the orchestra. Extra rehearsals drives up the budget very quickly. They'd need to completely sell out all nights to make it worthwhile, or take a loss. ALL: I have some sad news on my end. My aunt, dad's sis, was killed while swimming in the ocean off the coast of Turkey. Hit by a boat. She was in her early 50's. Rather sudden. I feel the loss more when I talk about it than otherwise. I didn't get to see her very often as she lived in oregon. Still, she was a presence in my life, and very much loved. (And many more) I got promoted to Programmer/Analyst at work (was a Programmer). No money, just a title. However, I guess it'll look good on my resume. Adam--So sorry to hear about your aunt. I hope you all are ok. Am I nutz--didn't y'all announce "Sweeney" would be on the schedule this year? Yes, I know I'm nutz... Well, we've got 3 more hours of Larry Sanders shows to watch. What a nice chore! Has anybody else seen this show? We love Arthur. I can break Tasha up in nothing flat by yelling "HORSESHIT!" in his voice. PapaSON brian 5876 Saturday Fr: ceal wutka 06/15/96 To: loonies 10:30 Re: lesser stuff Adam: Sorry to hear about your aunt. That was horrible! Neil: I don't understand why or how a printer is designed just to work with Windows 95, unless it has drivers for it. That would be a plus since a lot of products, even new ones, do not. My old Epson FX80 that used to attach to Leela's Apple //e is sitting here and performs anytime Win95 asks it to. (Wish I could figure out how to just get a quick draft mode though.) The HP Deskjet does fine also. As for speed, I don't think it matters so much in color. The few times we use the color feature, we are probably only doing one page. It prints the book chapters for Mark pretty quickly. I got a desktop laminator for the office this week and a bunch of samples of luggage tag size films came with it. So I am going to try to capture Ozzie (Samantha's favorite CD rom character) to put on cardstock in color and then laminate for a back-pack nametag for her. Last night we also bought "Let's Explore the Airport" that has this blue bug Buzzy to lead us on our field trip. I also kept the Fischer Price airport my own kids played with and I am going to get it out today. Samantha has been very much a momma's girl recently and I hope this all helps on the day she is to go with us to fly to Cincinnati while her parents take the day to drive up there. We are finding these "Ozzie" CD's all over. Seems a few companies have presented the finished product. Last night we found a package identical in content to "Ozzie's World" (this has 4 places to visit) that was called "The Otter." I should mention that Ozzie is an otter. Samantha loves the hidden pictures on these Cd's and I would love to find a CD with all hidden pictures. These are good for her level of mouse control. PUzzles are harder because of drag-n-drop. I am learning to do everything from Windows so it will be second nature to me (eventually). I've yet to hook it up since the desk it will use is taken up with the old pc right now. We are setting it up in another room soon, with a mirror of the software from Alice's work computer. She is going to work at home during the olympics. Any - I have some reading to do - also, just had a really great first date. I took the subway home, per usual, and he called to make sure I got home OK - whata sweetie! Lost the appeal but may have some good job leads anyway. One good interview today for a good part-time job which is mine if I want it, $$ not so great, though, and a great job I don't have such a good shot at on Friday. I'll still try. Looks like I'll be able to make ends meet and support my computer and kittiez. Love to the looniez! R Neil, I just yelled to Val what you said about Delta...she said they moved. Announcement time...in fact I might spam all your e-mail boxes with the same news. Thanks to a couple of nudges from Alan, the madhouse mailing list is now up and running. I've still yet to send the first message, but at least four of us have signed on. Seems like a good way to carry on the tradition in a more worldly fashion. Also, a mH home page is getting cranked up. Just a shell there now...I'm counting on some of you creative types to make us a good page. Coming soon to this home page will be some ancient pix of mH'ers. The one of moi should be good for scaring the crows off. Also, I plan on periodically (when nudged, probably) loading in bulk mH captures. All this stuff is at Alan's "dorje.com" The www site (the one y'all are gonna build) is at http://www.dorje.com/madhouse To sign up for the mailing list, send a message to listproc@dorje.com with a blank subject. Put the following in the body of the message: subscribe madhouse FirstName LastName Oh, we thought we'd try once again to con someone into updating the whos-who. Don't know why, though.
