Jonna and Alan's Vietnam and Cambodia Trip

For Jonna's big 60th birthday celebration we planned to visit a part of the world that has been on both of our travel wishlists: Vietnam and Cambodia. We found that Intrepid Travel had a one month long tour (actually made up to two separate tours booked together back-to-back) that visited both countries starting in Hanoi, Vietnam and ending in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Over the course of the first two weeks we'd visit the northern mountains and stay with a family there, travel down the coast by train and bus, exploring Ho Chi Minh City and touring the Mekong River Delta to way with another family there. For the second tour we would travel by bus to Phenom Penh to learn about the tragic modern history of Cambodia, then do a loop around Tonlé Sap (the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia) with stops in Battambang and then Siem Reap to visit the famous Angkor temple complexes like Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. Our return flights included an overnight in Bangkok so we took advantage of that layover to finish our trip with a bicycle tour there. We left on February 11 and returned on March 11. It was (another) trip of a lifetime!

Here are some of our favorite photos from the trip (each photo is a thumbnail linked to a higher quality picture.):

298) Bicycle Tour, Bangkok, Thailand, March 10, 2025 - We had an early flight out meaning we had to check-out of our hotel before breakfast was served. The staff kindly packed us boxes we could take with us so at least we could eat something while we waited at the airport. Our flight included an overnight lay-over in Bangkok. Never ones to waste a travel opportunity we had booked a hotel by the airport but then found a back alley bicycle tour online that we booked in advance. So as soon as our flight landed we rushed to the attached hotel, checked in and then jumped on the train into downtown Bangkok. We got off at a central station and then took a ride-share car to the riverside restaurant where the bicycle tour started. We arrived with just enough time to enjoy a cold drink before jumping on bicycles with five other tourists to explore the old section of the city. In addition to being a "back alley" ride this was also a food tour so after a short bit of pedaling we stopped at our first restaurant for stir fried veggies.

299) Bicycle Tour, Bangkok, Thailand, March 10, 2025 - Both of the stir fried dishes was with greens. Mine served with egg and Jonna's with meat.

300) Chao Phraya River, Bicycle Tour, Bangkok, Thailand, March 10, 2025 - We biked our way along the Chao Phraya River with great views of the temples across the river.

301) Bicycle Tour, Bangkok, Thailand, March 10, 2025 - Our next stop was for fried savory dough pockets. Honestly, I don't know what was inside but I do remember that they were vegetarian and very tasty.

302) Wat Kalayanamit Woramahawiharn, Bicycle Tour, Bangkok, Thailand, March 10, 2025 - Our next stop was at Wat Kalayanamit Woramahawiharn which is a large temple. Inside was a large golden statue of the Buddha but the most notable thing about this temple is that it has the largest bell of any temple in Thailand. Our guide allowed our group to ring the bell and Jonna volunteered to do the honors. This involved swinging a large, heavy log that was suspended from the roof over the bell and then banging the side of the massive 10 foot tall bronze bell.

303) Bicycle Tour, Bangkok, Thailand, March 10, 2025 - Next we stopped at a little cafe to try the most iconic dish of Thailand - Pad Thai. Again, mine was made vegetarian while Jonna got the more traditional meat version. Next we crossed over the Chao Phraya River on a big bridge which gave us a chance to see other side.

304) Bicycle Tour, Bangkok, Thailand, March 10, 2025 - We cycled through some more back streets including going over some of the canals which provide water access to the river from downtown. This gave us some glimpses of live along the waterway.

305) Bicycle Tour, Bangkok, Thailand, March 10, 2025 - Our next stop was at a roadside market where we got to sample various tropical fruits like watermelon, pineapple, mango, rose apple and jack fruit.

306) Bicycle Tour, Bangkok, Thailand, March 10, 2025 - My favorite section of the tour was a section of narrow walkways that would through a neighborhood. People waved as we rode by and we got to look into the yards of the homes which gave us a sense of how people lived in this area.

307) Bicycle Tour, Bangkok, Thailand, March 10, 2025 - After completing our ride down the "far" side of the river hopped a ferry to get back to the downtown area. We rode through one of the temple districts before stopping at a specialty ice cream shop for scoops. Then we rode to the Royal Temple complex to watch sun set over the Royal Palace. Then for the "wow" moment. We rode back out to the Chao Praya River for a nighttime view of Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) all lit up across the river.

308) Bicycle Tour, Bangkok, Thailand, March 10, 2025 - Our final stop on the bicycle tour was at a street-side restaurant that had tables set up on the sidewalk our front. We got a table big enough for our whole group and then the waitstaff proceeded to fill it with bowls of food: Steamed rice, egg omelet, stir-fried cabbage, papaya salad, curried vegetables and a couple of different meat dishes including larb (stir fried pork). We ate until we were stuffed. Fortunately, it was only a short ride back to the bike tour's office so we didn't have to pedal far on such full stomachs. This was a fun way to spend our layover evening in Bangkok and was well worth the cost and effort compared to just hanging out at the airport hotel for the evening. The next day we flew from Bangkok to Toyko, then from Tokyo to San Francisco and then finally from San Francisco to Denver. This was a fantastic trip and a perfect way to celebrate Jonna's 60th!
